Dance legend Virpi Pahkinen is celebrating her 40th anniversary as a dancer and choreographer
As one of Sweden’s most brilliant international artists, Virpi Pahkinen has fascinated audiences throughout the decades with her distinctive and soulful dance art. From her first performance, already at age 18, Virpi has steered her own course and carved out a place of her own in dance history.
But it is not only within dance that Virpi has made an impression. She has spoken in Sommar i P1 (Summer on P1), one of the the most popular shows on Swedish Radio, published the book Ormbäraren (Serpentholder) in Sweden and Finland – and she is a style icon who collaborated with designers such as Martin Bergström and Diana Orving and created costume designs for her own performances.
During the anniversary year 2025, Virpi will celebrate with a national tour with the work Change, play for the large Stockholm audience in Vita Bergsparken, and have a world premiere with the work Virpi Lunaire at Dansens Hus. Her new book Visp, observations from the Blue Line to the Sombrero Galaxy, will be published in March. In the interview with Fanny Berliner, you get to take part in the winding story of an artist like no other.
The unique hairstyle then, shaved with three braids, Virpi’s signature? Well, it also has a history.
Happy reading!
